General Information

1 League Start
League play begins Wednesday, April 1st, 2026. The first four weeks establish handicaps for new members and serve as practice for returning members. Only new members need to submit score cards during this period. League competition begins Wednesday, April 22nd.
2 Season End
The contract runs through September 23rd. The end of official competition will be determined by the date of the end-of-year league outing. Village Greens will honor league rates through October.
3 Course & Tees
Weekly league play is at Village Greens of Woodridge Golf Course. White tees will be used by everyone except seniors. Seniors (age 70+) at the start of the regular season will use gold tees.
4 Tee Times
Tee times run 2:10 to 4:10 p.m. on Wednesdays — please be prompt. Members should make tee time reservations by Tuesday so Village Greens can manage Wednesday scheduling. Tee times will be assigned and distributed. No one may check in before 1:30 p.m.

6 Score Submission
All scores must be submitted electronically by email to degolfleague@gmail.com before the close of business on the Monday following play. Late submissions receive zero points — no exceptions.
7 League Dues
Dues are $20.00 per season, payable to any officer at the course. $30.00 per player after April 22, 2026.

Pay Kevin Power via Zelle: southsideirishkwp@hotmail.com or (630) 220-5569.

Dues must be paid before any points will be awarded — points will not be awarded retroactively.
8 Weather Policy
The league will never officially cancel a round. Members may play in questionable weather at their own risk, though note that fewer players competing means a lower maximum point total for that week. If Village Greens closes due to severe weather, they will attempt to email members. If uncertain, contact the course directly.
9 Eligible Rounds
Only rounds played during Wednesday afternoon league competition count toward league points. This ensures all players compete under close to the same conditions.
II

Handicap System

Handicaps are based on nine (9) holes of play using the USGA handicap system. The handicap is calculated on the basis of the first 3 rounds, then incrementally upward to best 3 of 4, 3 of 5, 4 of 6, 5 of 7, etc., until the USGA criterion of best 10 of last 20 rounds is satisfied.

For players with an established record from this league or another (documented to the satisfaction of league officers), handicap may be calculated using rounds from the previous 4 seasons.

The order of handicap strokes is based on hole difficulty as defined by the course score card. The most difficult hole is handicapped as #1, the next most difficult as #2, etc.

Handicap Differentials Used by Rounds Played

Rounds Played Differentials Used Rule
1 – 2 No Handicap Index issued
3 – 5 3 Average of all 3, or best 3 of 4–5 × 0.96
6 4 Best 4 of 6 × 0.96
7 5 Best 5 of 7 × 0.96
8 6 Best 6 of 8 × 0.96
9 7 Best 7 of 9 × 0.96
10 8 Best 8 of 10 × 0.96
11 9 Best 9 of 11 × 0.96
12 – 20 10 Best 10 of last 20 × 0.96

Handicap Differential Formula

Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score − USGA Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating

Handicap Index = 0.96 × Average of best N differentials

113 is the Slope Rating of a course of standard difficulty. Round differentials to the nearest tenth.

III

Scoring System

Weekly Points
N points
where N = number of players that week.
Lowest net score earns N, next earns N−1, etc.
Season Standings
Best 12
rounds count. Lowest-point rounds discarded.
Minimum 12 rounds to be eligible for a division trophy.

Points are awarded based on net scores for all scores submitted each week. The player with the lowest net score receives the maximum points equal to the number of players competing. Members not playing receive 0 points.

At the end of the season, the lowest-point rounds are discarded so that only each player's best 12 rounds count toward final standings. This allows members to miss up to 8 weeks without penalty. Players with fewer than 12 rounds have all rounds counted.

Scoring Example — 9-Player League, 3-Week Season

Player Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Total Standing
Poor (plays every week) 5 pts 6 pts 5 pts 16 pts 1st
Medium (plays 2 of 3) 7 pts 8 pts 0 15 pts 2nd
Good (plays 1 of 3) 0 10 pts 0 10 pts 3rd
Key takeaway: Frequency of play is generally more important than weekly net score. It is always worthwhile to submit a score — even a poor round earns some points.

New Member Qualifying Rule

New league members must play and submit at least 3 score cards during the first 4 weeks of the season to establish their handicap. Until their third score is submitted, any rounds turned in on competition weeks count only toward establishing a handicap — those rounds receive 0 points and will not be retroactively updated.

IV

Divisions & Annual Trophies

The league is divided into three divisions based on handicap distribution from the previous season, with roughly one third of golfers in each. Divisions are based on 18-hole handicap equivalent.

  • Trophies are presented at the end-of-year league outing.
  • Champions keep the trophy and agree to display it in their office for the entire year they are champion.
  • No one can win a division trophy two years in a row, even if they end up in a different division the following year.

Awarded to the member(s) who play the most rounds during the season.

Weekly Contest

Each week a sleeve of golf balls is awarded to the winner of the weekly contest. Sleeves are distributed at the end-of-year outing.

VI

Rules of Play & Local Rules

The basic rules governing league play are the current USGA Rules of Golf ↗. Penalties are assessed as stroke play (loss of strokes). In disputes, league officers make the final ruling. Every stroke must be played — no gimme putts, no preferred lies except as noted under Winter Rules (D) below.

A

Ball Out of Bounds

When a ball is out of bounds, the player may either:

  1. Drop on the nearest playable surface to where the ball crossed the boundary (not closer to the hole) — 1 stroke penalty.
  2. Play from the original spot — 1 stroke penalty (USGA stroke and distance rule).

Tip: If using option 2, play a provisional ball to keep pace of play.

B

Lost Ball

When a ball is lost, the player may either:

  1. Drop another ball as close as possible to where the ball was last seen — 1 stroke penalty.
  2. Play from the original spot — 1 stroke penalty (USGA stroke and distance rule).

Tip: Play a provisional ball to speed play.

C

Water Hazards

All water hazards at Village Greens of Woodridge shall be considered lateral water hazards.
D

Winter Rules

When conditions such as spring thaws, prolonged rains, or extreme heat make fairways unsatisfactory — or when a ball lies in a divot, mud on the ball, patch of poorly mowed grass, bare spot, or depression — a ball lying on the fairway may be lifted, cleaned, and placed within 6 inches of the original lie (no closer to the hole), without penalty, to preserve as nearly as possible the stance required. This rule does not apply in the rough or in other fairways.
E

Sand Trap Play

  1. A ball coming to rest in any sand trap may be lifted and cleaned, the natural lie recreated by raking, and the ball replaced on the original spot as closely as possible.
  2. If excessive water makes the ball unplayable, it may be cleaned and moved to another part of the trap where a reasonable stance is possible. If that is not possible, the ball may be dropped within 2 club lengths of the trap, keeping the original spot between the drop area and the hole.
F

Mulligans

Mulligans are not permitted.
G

Speed of Play

  • A player may substitute a clean ball for their ball on the putting surface to speed play.
  • A player should pick up after 10 strokes on any hole and record a score of 10 on their card.
  • Groups larger than foursomes are not permitted. Any member playing in such a group will not have their score counted for that day.
